Looking for fun Earth Day activities to do at home? Here are a few fun ways to celebrate Earth Day!
Earth Day—which is on April 22, 2020 is celebrating its 50th anniversary! This special day honors our beautiful Mother Earth and is celebrated globally with almost every country participating.
Because of the current pandemic, we’ll all celebrate at home yet united globally as we focus on caring for our magnificent Earth.
Here are a few Earth Day Activities for the Whole Family:
1. Start a veggie garden
Growing a veggie garden can be one of the most fun and rewarding activities you can do. The key is choosing easy to grow veggies. Some good ones to start are beets, carrots, radishes and peppers, many of which you can start by using the ends you usually compost. Simply put them by a window in some water and watch them start to grow. Once they are strong enough, transplant them into a pot or your veggie garden box.
2. Make a call-to-action to share on social media
Show your support for Earth Day 2020 by posting a short video. Give your friends an #EarthDayChallenge to try, like growing a tree or starting a simple veggie garden, sharing a photo of yourself holding up a sign with a new eco-friendly habit you commit to adopting moving forward, or simply share a few facts about global warming or ocean preservation to help spread awareness. The point here is to nudge our friends as we all work to reduce our carbon footprint and create more sustainable habits.
3. Build birdhouse or bird feeder
Share your home with all of the Earth’s creatures by building a birdhouse or bird feeder out of recycled materials, such as an old cardboard box or milk jug, to help out our local bird population. Hang it on a tree branch or carefully place it securely on a branch and let the feast begin for our bird friends. Find a spot about 10 feet away and sit quietly while you observe the bird’s behavior and species.
4. Brainstorm eco-friendly ideas for around the house
Help your family become more eco-friendly by creating signs to remind them of small things they can do to make a big difference in caring for our Earth. Here are some ideas, use both sides of a piece of paper, donate clothing you no longer fit it or use, turn off lights when you leave a room, switch to LED bulbs, turn the AC to a higher temperature in the AM when the house is still cool from the night before, don’t let the water run while you brush your teeth, start a compost bin, stop using disposable bags, refill your water bottle, reuse scrap paper, fix leaky faucets, collect rainwater and water your plants. These are all small things which we can all be doing that make a significant difference when we all do them across every household.
5. Craft a nature collage
Celebrate Earth Day Wednesday by making an all-natural art collage with things you’ve found in your backyard, like leaves, pressed flowers, pieces of bark and other small items. Make a list before you go out to your yard and make it a scavenger hunt for extra fun. If you have a sibling or do it with mom or dad, sit and compare your findings.
Have fun as you celebrate the beauty Earth gifs to us every day. Make sure to adopt new ways to care for our Earth during the rest of the year.
